HENDERSON, KY.—On Saturday, March 20, the Madisonville Community College will host the Western Regional Science Olympiad Tournament on the North Campus.
More than 250 high school and middle school students from across western Kentucky will bring their homemade robots, flying machines, and mousetrap vehicles to compete for honors and the chance to advance on to the State Tournament to be held in April at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.
Student teams from Allen, Butler, Grayson, Warren, Marshall, Christian, and Graves counties will compete. Each school team is comprised of 15 students and during the tournament they pair together to answer science questions in areas such as fossils, ecology, disease prevention and prevalence, anatomy, chemistry, ornithology and map-reading using remote sensing devices.
MCC faculty serve as event judges to prepare questions and rank team performance. Parents accompany high school and middle school coaches to the tournament, where a full day of event activities culminates in recognition of winners with medals at the award ceremony.
For over 25 years, the Science Olympiad has provided a format for young students to engage in tests of their knowledge of science and engineering. The public is welcome to attend the event and view student projects.
